The white grape variety originates from the Iberian Peninsula from the border region Portugal/Spain. Synonyms are Alfrocheiro Branco, Cagarnixo, Carão de Moça, Cumbrao, Folgasona, Folgosão, Folgusão, Fulgasão, Gagarnixo, Laga, Malvasia da Trincheira, Terrantez, Terrantez da Madeira (Portugal); Cagarnizo, Cagarrizo, Silveiriña, Uva do Laga, Uva da Lage. It should not be confused with the varieties Arinto de Buceals, Malvasia Fina, Terrantez, Terrantez do Pico or Terrantez da Terceira, despite seemingly suggestive synonyms and morphological similarities. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it comes from a presumably natural cross between Savagnin (Traminer) x unknown partner. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see Molecular genetics). The Folgasão Roxo variety is a somatic mutation with reddish berries. Folgasão is a parent of the Roupeiro Branco variety created by natural crossing.
