The red grape variety comes from Italy; the name is derived from the shape of the leaf (foglia = leaf, tonda = round). It should not be confused with the Casetta (Lambrusco a Foglia Tonda), Enantio (Foja Tonda) or Malbo Gentile varieties, despite the apparent synonyms or morphological similarities. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2008, there is a parent-offspring relationship with the Sangiovese variety. The medium-ripening vine has an exceptionally high phenolic content in the skins. It produces dark-coloured, full-bodied red wines with ageing potential. The variety used to be widespread in southern Tuscany, but was almost extinct until the early 1990s. It is now being grown again in the provinces of Firenze, Pistoia and Siena, mainly in the Chianti-Classico area, and is used as a blend with Sangiovese. The variety is approved for example in the DOC wines Orcia and Valdichiana Toscana. In 2016, 68 hectares of vineyard area were designated with a decreasing tendency (statistics Kym Anderson).
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
