Flea Ox

Designation for a no longer existing reed in the municipality of Dürnstein in the Lower Austrian wine growing region Wachau. The rights to the name are held by the Domäne Wachau winegrowers' cooperative, which produced a branded wine until the 1980s. This also applies to the brands Himmelstiege and Katzensprung. A "Dürnsteiner Flohhaxn" as well as "Dürnsteiner Katzensprung" were presented on 15 May 1955 at the banquet in the Belvedere in Vienna served on the occasion of the signing of the Austrian State Treaty. At that time, these wines were bottled in a special bottle shape (at that time 0.7 l). The lower half was cylindrical, the upper half was conical with an additionally applied ring bead (see bottom left of the picture). Today the rights to the name "Flohhaxn" are held by the Morandell company, which has a wine (1 l) produced by the Huber winery in the Traisen valley.
