The "Federation Internationale des Journalistes et Ecrivains des Vins et Spiritueux" was founded in Paris (France) in 1989 with the aim of promoting contact between wine journalists worldwide. This includes linking and supporting contacts between members as well as publishers, newspapers and magazines, recognition by producers, publishers and retailers, organising press presentations, safeguarding freedom of expression, organising study trips and ensuring that members comply with the ethical FIJEV Charter. Membership of FIJEV is possible in the form of "active", "associate" and "supporting" as well as "meritorious honourary member".
Active members include publicly recognised journalists, columnists and editors with regular publications, as well as authors and writers on the subject of wine and spirits who have met the FIJEV statutes/criteria after submitting their application. In the case of associate members, their scope of activity is not sufficient. Supporting members include those interested in wine and spirits, trade associations, oenologists, wine merchants, wineries, distilleries, PR companies, restaurateurs and hoteliers. There are members from 60 countries. A yearbook is published every two years. The association Weinfeder e.V. acts as the German section of the FIJEV. See also under Literature and Winegrowing Institutions.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
