The white grape variety originates from Romania. Synonyms grouped alphabetically by country are Danesdörfer Königsast, Dünesdörfer Königsast, Königliche Mädchentraube, Königsast, Königstochter, Weißer Kölner (Germany, Austria); Dănășană, Dănășeană, Dăneșană, Dánosi Leányka, Dunășană, Galbenă de Ardeal, Galbenă di Ardeal, Gelbenă de Ardeal, Fetească de Danes, Fetească Korolevskaia, Fetească Muscatnaia, Fetească Muskatnaia, Fetească Regale, Fetească Regola, Fetjaska Korolevskaja (Romania); Pesecká Leánka (Slovakia); Erdei Sarga,(Hungary).

The vine was discovered in the 1920s by a gardener named Gaspari in the municipality of Danes near the town of Shigisoara in Transylvania. He first called it Dunesdörfer Königsast. A wine made from it was presented by Gaspari at a wine exhibition in Bucharest in 1928 under the name Fetească Regală.
