The UN's specialised agency "Food and Agriculture Organization", based in Rome, was founded in Québec (Canada) in 1945. In German-speaking countries, the FAO is also known as the "World Food Organisation". Its current members are around 180 countries and the European Union. Its aim is to improve the production and distribution of agricultural products in general and food in particular worldwide in order to ensure food security and improve living standards.

"Fiat Panis" ("Let there be bread") is the official motto of the FAO of the United Nations. It is symbolic of the organisation's central mission: to fight hunger in the world and promote food security through agricultural development. The picture on the right shows the FAO headquarters in Rome (Italy).
