Abbreviation for "Food and Agriculture Organization". This specialised agency of the UN, which has been based in Rome since 1951, was founded in Québec (Canada) in 1945. In the German-speaking world, the FAO is also known as the "World Food Organisation". Its members are currently around 180 countries and the EU. Its objective is to improve the production and distribution of agricultural products in general and food in particular worldwide in order to ensure food security and improve living standards. For this purpose, the "Codex Alimentarius" was developed, which defines international standards for food safety. Alcoholic beverages are also affected by this. See also a list of various organisations under Viticultural Institutions.
