Abbreviation for "Food and Agriculture Organization". This specialized agency of the UNO with headquarters in Rome since 1951 was founded in Québec (Canada) in 1945. In the German-speaking world, the FAO is also known as the Food and Agriculture Organization. Its members are currently around 180 states and the EU. Its objective is to improve the production and distribution of agricultural products in general and food products in particular worldwide in order to ensure food security and improve living standards. To this end, the "Codex Alimentarius" was developed, which defines international standards for food safety. Alcoholic beverages are also affected by this. See also under Viticulture Institutions.
