Fan-leafed

Synonym for brushwood disease; see there.

The vine disease belongs to the group of yellowing diseases. Synonyms are Arricciamento (Italian), Court-noué, Dégénérescence infectieuse, Panachure (French), Fan Leaf (English), Gelbmosaik (German) and Urticado (Portuguese). It is the oldest known and most widespread viral disease of the grapevine. It was already known to the Romans, which is confirmed by surviving descriptions of the symptoms. In European literature, there have been records for about 150 years.

There was a sharp increase in Europe from the 1880s during the phylloxera catastrophe caused by contaminated American rootstocks. In the 19th century, it was assumed that the cause was a degenerative consequence of excessive vegetative propagation. Due to the gradual course of the disease, an infestation is not recognised immediately. The protracted disease process can take up to ten years.
