Name authorised in Austria for certain quality wines. It may only be used for vintage wines with the best recognisable characteristics in terms of their varietal character and origin. The provision that information on the selection criteria must be included on the label was eliminated in 2018. However, this designation is not permitted for Prädikatswein. However, Ausstich must not be confused with the Prädikatswein level Auslese. The name originates from the custom that the cellar master of larger wineries annually selects the best quality barrel of the vintage determined by tasting and bottles it separately or "stands out". See other designations of the same or similar conditions under Austria in the section "Other wine designations" as well as special wines.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
