The red grape variety is a new breed between Mavrud x Merlot. Synonyms are Evmolpiya and Thracian Mavrud. The crossing was made in Bulgaria by the breeder Dimitiar Babrikov. The plant variety protection was granted in 1991. The early to medium maturing vine is relatively resistant to Botrytis. It produces full-bodied, neutral red wines with moderate tannin and alcohol content. In 2010, 92 hectares were designated in Bulgaria (Kym Anderson). There are also small stocks in the USA and Australia.
