Ancient people (Etrusci, Tusci, Etrurians, Tyrrhenians) in Etruria who lived in north-central Italy and called themselves Rasenna. The exact origin is unclear. It is assumed that they immigrated from Asia Minor, but they are also regarded as an ancient indigenous population of Italy. The first evidence appears around 1,000 BC, when they probably landed on the Tyrrhenian coast, spread to the other side of the Adriatic and colonised central Italian Etruria (lat. Tuscia, grch. Tyrrhenia). This area between the Tiber, the Apennines and the Tyrrhenian Sea named after them corresponds to modern-day Tuscany as well as parts of Umbria and Lazio. However, the influence of the Etruscans also extended as far as today's two regions of Abruzzo and Marche.
