The red grape variety (also Kuhlmann 237-2) is an interspecific new variety between Millardet et Grasset 101-14 S.P. (Riparia x Rupestris) x Gold Riesling (1). It contains genes of Vitis riparia, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed at the beginning of the 20th century at the Oberlin Institute in Colmar-Elsass by the French breeder Eugène Kuhlmann (1858-1932). Incidentally, the same parents also produced the six new varieties Etoile I, Léon Millot, Lucie Kuhlmann, Maréchal Foch, Maréchal Joffre and Pinard. This early-maturing vine is resistant to frost and fungal diseases and produces velvety red wines. In 2016, however, no stocks were recorded (Kym Anderson).
