Ethyl mercaptan

Foul-smelling, toxic liquid (outdated ethyl mercaptan, newer designation ethanethiol), which is still perceptible even in the lowest concentrations. The perception threshold is one milligram per tonne. The substance is found in coal tar and in crude oil. It causes the wine defect " Böckser"; see also under thiols.
