Designation for a historical province comprising the coastal strip in central Portugal including Lisbon. It overlaps with today's Região de Lisboa and the districts of Leiria and Setúbal. The name probably derives from the Latin adjective "extremus", which means "border area" or "border area (to the Moors)". Extremadura has the same name origin on the Spanish side. Until 2008, Estremadura was the name for what is now the Lisboa region. The name was changed to avoid confusion with the Spanish region.
