The Republic of Estonia (Estonian: Eesti) with its capital Tallinn is the most northerly of the three Baltic states and covers 45,339 square kilometres. The former USSR state has been independent since 1990. Its territory includes over 2,000 mostly tiny islands, of which only 19 are inhabited. The four largest off the Baltic coast are Saaremaa (2,671 km²), Hiiumaa (989 km²), Muhu (198 km²) and Vormsi (93 km²). Estonia borders Latvia to the south, Russia to the east and the Baltic Sea to the north and west. Viticulture plays only a minor role. Berry wines (rowanberries, blackcurrants, blueberries), fruit wines, rhubarb wines, apple wines and honey wines are mainly produced.
