Esprit

The white grape variety is a complex interspecific new breeding between Edelweiss x Villard Blanc. Synonyms or breeding numbers are ES 422 and Esprit. It contains genes from eight grape species, namely Vitis aestivalis, Vitis berlandieri, Vitis cinerea, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis riparia, Vitis rupestris, and Vitis vinifera. The crossing of the hybrid was carried out by the breeder Elmer Swenson (1913-2004) at his farm in Osceola, Wisconsin. The variety was granted protection in 1984. The variety was a crossing partner in the new breeding Delisle. The early to mid-ripening vine is resistant to frost down to minus 29 °Celsius, but susceptible to both mildew types and Botrytis. It produces fruity white wines. The variety is also used as table grapes. In 2016, stocks were recorded in the US states of Colorado and Iowa (2 ha). Source: Wine Grapes / J. Robinson, J. Harding, J.
