Engelstein

single vineyard in the municipality of Boppard in the German wine-growing region of the Middle Rhine. It is part of the Bopparder Hamm vineyard, which is also a district of Boppard with the same name. The site forms the eastern end of this vineyard and lies about 180 metres from the Rhine. The vineyards, which face southwest to southeast at an altitude of 80 to 160 metres above sea level, cover about three hectares on clay-slate weathered soil with a reddish hue due to iron content. With a slope of 50 to 65% (33°), the site is one of the steepest vineyards in Germany. The warm microclimate is confirmed by the large occurrence of the green lizard. The two vineyards "In der Zech" and "Am Weißen Wacke" are classified as cadastral sites. Riesling is the main grape grown here. The Müller Matthias and Weingart Florian wineries, for example, have shares in the site.
