The winery is located in the municipality of Winterbach in the German wine-growing region of Württemberg. The family's almost 500-year winemaking tradition dates back to 1514. The winery as we know it today was taken over by Jürgen Ellwanger in 1949 and fully converted to viticulture ten years later. In 1986, he was one of the founders of the Hades Group, whose members are among the German pioneers in barrique ageing. Today, the business is run by Jörg and Sylvia Ellwanger together with Felix Ellwanger.

Vineyards & grape varieties

The vineyards cover 26 hectares of vines in five municipalities. These are the single vineyard sites Altenberg, Burghalde and Sonnenberg (Schnait), Berg, Lichtenberg and Linnenbrunnen (Hebsack), Grafenberg (Schorndorf), Hungerberg (Winterbach) and Lichtenberg (Geradstetten).
