Eisele Vineyard

The origins of the Californian winery date back to the early 1880s, when the two winegrowers Jackson G. Randall and his neighbour Charles Nathan Pickett († 1919) first planted a vineyard with Riesling and Zinfandel vines. This is located east of Calistoga in the AVA area of the same name in north-east Napa Valley, at the foot of the Palisades Mountain Range. The vineyard remained in the Pickett family until the Second World War (1939-1945), after which it changed hands several times. In 1964, the Cabernet Sauvignon variety was cultivated for the first time.

The Eisele family era

In 1969, Milton and Barbara Eisele purchased the 65-hectare (162-acre) estate in northern Napa Valley and named it "Eisele Vineyard". The grapes were initially supplied to Paul Draper from Ridge Vineyards, where the first "Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon" was produced in 1971. This was one of the first Californian wines with a vineyard designation. In 1974, another wine from this vineyard was vinified by Conn Creek Winery. From 1975 to 1991, Joseph Phelps continued this tradition and used the grapes for his wines, in particular for the "Insignia", which were vinified in his own cellar and marketed under the name "Joseph Phelps Vineyards".
