The German Gerhard Eichelmann, who lives in Heidelberg, publishes the annual wine guide "Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine". After a successful international career as a management consultant, he founded the independent wine magazine "Mondo" and the publishing house "Mondo Heidelberg" in 1997. The wine guide presents the best German wine producers and their wines. The 2006 edition includes 936 wineries with 9390 wines. Each winery as a whole and their wines are evaluated in the order sparkling wines, white wines, rosés and white autumns as well as red wines. The basis of the winery evaluation is the overall performance of the winery in the last three years. Therefore 5 stars (world class, international top producer), 4 stars (excellent), 3 stars (very good), 2 stars (good) and 1 star (above average, reliable) are awarded.
As honorary chairman of the Domäne Wachau, it is the easiest and quickest way for me to access the wein.plus encyclopaedia when I have questions. The certainty of receiving well-founded and up-to-date information here makes it an indispensable guide.
