Ecuador

The presidential republic of Ecuador in the north-west of South America with the capital Quito covers 256,370 km². Located between Colombia and Peru, the country is named after the equatorial line that runs through the northern part of its territory. The Galápagos Islands, which belong to Ecuador, are located between 928 km and 1,272 km west of the coast in the Pacific Ocean.

Viticulture

Viticulture plays only a minor role. In 2021, the vineyards covered only 84 hectares. Around 50 hectares are located on the Pacific coast and are subject to a tropical climate. Up to three harvests a year are possible here due to the proximity to the equator. Others were planted at the beginning of the 1980s in the mountainous provinces of Azuay, Canar, Cotopaxi, Imbabura, Loja, Pinchincha and Tungurahua at the foot of the Andes. The climate here is cooler and there is only one crop. In the mid-1980s, the German Hermann Jäger from Ockenheim am Rhein (former president of the Rheinhessen Winegrowers' Association) planted vines at 2,700 metres above sea level. These are among the highest vineyards in the world.
