Drum sample

Name of a young wine that has not yet been bottled and labelled for general marketing (sometimes it is bottled for transport purposes). It is given by the producers to journalists and professional tasters for an initial wine evaluation. This allows first statements about the quality and development potential of wines. However, such a wine may still have a necessary development through bottle aging ahead of it. Therefore it is common practice to taste and evaluate these wines again after a reasonable period of time (at least one year). Such barrel wine tastings are an absolute prerequisite for the possibility of subscription (pre-order and advance sale of wines). See also a list of relevant keywords under Fass.
