The winery is located in the municipality of Birkweiler (Südliche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. It was founded after the First World War by Karl Wehrheim, who introduced bottling very early on. His son Dr Heinz Wehrheim continued to expand the business. After completing a degree in agricultural science and a practical year in the USA, the estate has been run by Karl-Heinz Wehrheim since 1992 and now together with son Franz Wehrheim. The vineyards, one third of which are steep slopes, cover a total of 20 hectares of vineyards in the single vineyard sites Kastanienbusch, Mandelberg and Rosenberg, as well as the cadastral site Am Dachsberg (all in Birkweiler). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (with one third of the vineyard area), Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Silvaner, Gewürztraminer and Muskateller, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, St. Laurent, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Certified biodynamic viticulture is practised according to the rules of the respekt-BIODYN association.
As honorary chairman of the Domäne Wachau, it is the easiest and quickest way for me to access the wein.plus encyclopaedia when I have questions. The certainty of receiving well-founded and up-to-date information here makes it an indispensable guide.
