The winery is located in the municipality of Saarburg (Saar area) in the German wine-growing region of Mosel. It was built by Josef Heinrich Wagner, the great-grandfather of the current owner Heinz Wagner, from 1898 to 1900 as a sparkling wine and wine cellar. He thus founded the sparkling wine industry on the Saar. Wagner's quality wines were supplied to several Berlin salons and also to the court of Saxe-Coburg. After his training in Reims (Champagne) from 1900 onwards, Adolf Wagner (*1876) built the Saarfels Castle sparkling wine cellars in nearby Serrig between 1912 and 1914. However, the castle had to be sold due to the First World War and the economic crisis at the beginning of the 1930s; the parent company in Saarburg, however, remained.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
