Donauriesling

The white grape variety is a new variety between Riesling x FR 589-54 (incidentally, the same parents also gave rise to the new German variety Johanniter ). The father variety was already created in 1954 at the viticultural institute in Freiburg (Germany). It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis, Vitis cinerea, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera (such as Chasselas and Pinot Gris). The crossing of the Donausriesling took place in 1978 at the Klosterneuburger Weinbauinstitut (Austria). At the beginning of 1990, the stocks of the time were finally cleared. However, a last selection saved the variety from complete oblivion. The late-ripening vine is resistant to both powdery mildew and botrytis and is considered a PIWI variety. It yields a riesling-like white wine with moderate acidity. Due to its good wine quality, it was released for the quality grade "wine" in Austria in 2012. The release as a quality wine grape variety is aimed for in the medium term. The Bauer Josef vineyard in the Wagram wine-growing region (Lower Austria) planted a small trial stand in 2012. However, no stocks were reported in 2018 (ÖWM-statistics).
