Dominican Winery C. von Nell-Breuning

The winery is located in the municipality of Kasel (Ruwertal area) in the German Moselle wine growing region. The winegrowing tradition in the family was founded in 1670 by Peter Christian Nell, who was ennobled in 1709 by Emperor Joseph I (1678-1711) for his merits. In 1804 Napoleon Bonaparte visited Trier and stayed as a guest of the Nell family. Under Oskar von Nell, the winery with a chalk cellar was built in Kasel in 1890. Among the "greats of the world" who drank the wines of the House of Nell were, besides the French Emperor, the Russian Tsar Nicholas II, US President Gerald Ford, Mao Zedong, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and President François Mitterrand. During state visits and world economic summits, the German government repeatedly served its guests wines from the house under the various chancellors

Since June 2013, the winery has been managed by Dr. Carmen von Nell-Breuning, who is the 11th generation of her family to continue the winegrowing tradition. The vineyards comprise seven hectares of vineyards in the individual locations Dominikanerberg, Kehrnagel and Nies'chen (Kasel). Only the Riesling and Pinot Noir varieties are cultivated. From these, elegant, delicately fruity wines are produced by hand. As the oldest sparkling wine manufactory in the Ruwer Valley, fine-sparkling Riesling sparkling wines are also produced in traditional bottle fermentation with a yeast lager of several years. All products of the house are decorated with a crowned "N", which stands for the initial of the family name "Nell". They are marketed under the label "C. von Nell-Breuning".

The product range is grouped into different lines: "Lageweine" wines are made from the best, fully ripe grapes from the three individual vineyards. The "Meisterwerke" are produced from raisin grapes obtained from selective manual harvesting with strict yield limitation and are characterised by a long storage life. These include rarities such as Auslese and Beerenauslese from 1971, 1975 and 1976 as well as a TBA from 1994. The "Nouvelle Edition" includes the mild, dry RUVA NOVA as well as fine fruity Pinot Noir red wines from the Kaseler Nies'chen. The "Vintage Collection" includes Riesling sparkling wines produced according to the Champagne method and made from pure grape varieties. The names of the sparkling wines recall the friendship between Ludwig van Beethoven, Stephan and Eleonore von Breuning and are called LUDOVICO, STEPHANUS and ELEONORA.
