Domaine du Mont d'Or

The winery in the Swiss canton of Valais was founded in 1848 by François-Eugène Masson. The south-western steep slope of the Montorge hill to the west of Sion (Sion) has been reclaimed in painstaking work. 220 terraces had to be built, supported by dry-stone walls over a total length of 15 kilometres. By means of a sophisticated irrigation system, water was pumped up from the moorland to the vineyards by means of a steam pressure pump. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 495 to 660 metres above sea level with an average of 50 to 55% and some even with 75% hillside exposure. The son of the founder Georges brought the Silvaner from a visit to Schloss Johannisberg in the Rheingau in 1870, which he named in honour of the Schloss Johannisberg. The first wine was produced in 1880.
