General term for the custom of basically filling wine barrels to prevent them from drying out. This can be wine or sulphurous water. In the case of barriques, this is understood to mean the use for barrique ageing, whereby a barrel is usually filled once to a maximum of three times, as it is then exhausted.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
