Dern August

The German viticulture expert August Dern (1858-1930) studied natural sciences at the University of Würzburg. He then held a teaching position for agriculture and viticulture in Rheinhessen. From 1905 to 1924 he was Bavarian state inspector for viticulture. At the constituent assembly of the DLG (German Agricultural Society) in 1885, he suggested the foundation of the fruit and viticulture department, where he became chairman from 1913. Dern devoted himself to the problems of phylloxera and grapevine breeding at an early stage. In 1912 he established the main office for vine breeding in Neustadt an der Haardt (later Würzburg). He promoted quality viticulture and from 1913 was responsible for testing the then new grape variety Müller-Thurgau in practice. Also worth mentioning is his collaboration on the Reich Wine Laws of 1892, 1901 and 1909. After numerous publications, he edited the work "Viticulture and Wine Treatment" in 1914.
