The magazine "Der Weinkenner" was a pioneering achievement. It was the first wine magazine in the world dedicated to the subject of wine from the consumer's point of view. It made a significant contribution to the popularisation of wine enjoyment in everyday bourgeois life and thus stands at the beginning of the history of modern wine journalism.

The world's first popular wine magazine was published from October 1898 in Berlin(Germany) under the title "Der Weinkenner - Monatsschrift für Weinkonsumenten". The publisher was the wine importer Philipp Brand (1861-1935), an entrepreneur from Munkács (then Hungary, now Ukraine), who initially established himself in the German capital as an importer of Hungarian wines. His company Ph. Brand & Co. ran an innovative direct marketing programme with monthly offers. This ultimately gave rise to the idea for the magazine.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
