Denature

Term for the denaturation (modification) of alcohol, making it unusable for human consumption as potable alcohol for health reasons by adding mostly very bitter substances. The choice of denaturant depends on the intended use of the alcohol. According to the EU regulation, the homogeneous mixture must no longer be separable in an economically reasonable way. Commonly used are MEK (methyl ethyl ketone), Bitrex (denatonium benzoate, extremely bitter), petroleum ether, cyclohexane and toluene. A methylated spirit is completely denatured with MEK and Bitrex. The alcohol intended for the production of vinegar is denatured with acetic acid.
