Delirium tremens

Latin term (delir = to be mad or de lira ire = to go off the rails, tremere = to tremble) for a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of prolonged alcoholism. Alcohol delirium usually occurs in the context of alcohol withdrawal, but can also be triggered by alcohol intoxication. See under alcoholism.
