Delaware

The state on the east coast of the USA with the capital Dover covers 6,446 km². It borders Pennsylvania to the north, Maryland to the west and south and New Jersey to the north-east (separated by the Delaware River and Delaware Bay). On 7 December 1787, Delaware was the first of the 13 former colonies or founding states to ratify the new US Constitution, which created the legal framework for the United States of America. This ratification made it the first state to join the newly formed Union.

History

The first European settlers (Dutch, Swedes, later English) experimented with wine from local vines as early as the 17th century. However, significant quality viticulture only became established in the 19th century and came to a complete standstill due to national prohibition (1920-1933). Since the 1990s, viticulture has experienced a revival, led by wineries such as Nassau Valley Vineyards; since then, the number of small wineries has continued to grow slowly. The Delaware grape variety of the same name originated in Delaware County in Ohio and not in the state of Delaware; however, it is cultivated here on a small scale as it is well suited to the climate.
