Famous small town in Moldova about 15 km north of the capital Chisinãu with about 14,500 inhabitants. It is also the centre of the wine-growing area of the same name. The town has become famous as the very first tourist attraction because of its underground tunnel system with one of the largest wine collections in the world. The 65-kilometre-long system of tunnels carved into the limestone is comparable to the large Chamapagne cellars in Champagne. Around half of it is used for wine storage. Around 1.25 million bottles of wine mature at depths of up to 100 metres and on an area of around 53 hectares. In one part there are tasting rooms. The underground streets with traffic lights and traffic signs are named after the wines stored in them, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot.
For me, Lexicon from wein.plus is the most comprehensive and best source of information about wine currently available.
