Cover Red

The red grape variety (also Freiburg 71-119-39) is a new breed between Pinot Gris x Teinturier(Teinturier du Cher). This has also been confirmed by DNA analyses carried out in 2012. The crossing was carried out in 1938 by Dr. Johannes Zimmermann (1907-1998) at the State Viticulture Institute in Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg. The plant variety protection was granted in 1971. The variety was a crossing partner in the new varieties Dakapo and Piroso. The vine is generally well resistant to vine diseases. It produces colourful wines, which is why it is mainly used as a teinturier (dyer's grape) or for sweet reserve. In 2016, 12 hectares of vines were registered in Germany, mainly in the Baden region, and a tiny stand of 0.1 hectares in Switzerland (Kym Anderson statistics).
