The oldest Madeira House on the Portuguese island was founded in 1745 by the Scot Francis Newton, who was initially supported by his brother Thomas. Their compatriot Thomas Gordon joined them in 1758. The Irishman William Cossart joined the company in 1808, but the present name was only given to his nephew Peter Cossart in 1831. In the early years, the company was especially successful in the USA, where Madeira was very popular at that time. Thus, for example, in the year 1776, the American declaration of independence was sealed with Madeira. Cossart Gordon produces nearly all types of Madeira. In the year 1953, Cossart Gordon joined the Madeira Wine Company in which the companies Blandy and Symington have the majority shares.
