The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Corbina Comune, Corbina Nostrana, Corbina Padovana, Corbina Vicentina, Corbinella, Vice and Vicentina. The name is possibly derived from the dark colour of the berries.

The parentage of the vine is unknown. It should not be confused with the varieties Corvina Veronese, Corvinone or Hrvatica (all three with the synonym Corbina) due to some of the same synonyms or morphological similarities. The two varieties Corbina and Corvina Veronese were previously thought to be identical, but this was refuted by DNA analyses carried out in 2007.
