In 1847 Christian Adalbert Kupferberg (1824-1876) and his partner Robert Kempf founded the company Kempf & Kupferberg in Neustadt in der Pfalz with the aim of starting the "Fabrication of sparkling wines". In 1850 Kupferberg separated from Kempf and founded his own sparkling wine house in Mainz. On a hill above the city of Mainz - the Kästrich - he found ideal conditions, because underground there were large, extensive cellars. Thanks to the excellent quality of the sparkling wine, Kupferberg quickly acquired a large customer base, especially in Great Britain. The company became the export pioneer for German sparkling wine, namely the brands Rheinwein, Moselwein, Hochheimer and Sparkling Moselle.
