Cooper

Craft profession for the production of containers (barrels, vats, tubs, tubs and similar vessels) made from various types of wood (preferably oak), usually for liquids. Depending on the country and region, there are various names such as Binder, Böttcher or Bottiger (from Bottich), Böttner or Büttner (from Bütte), Fassbinder, Fässler, Fasszieher, Holzküfer, Kübler (from Kübel), Küfer, Küfner, Pinter, Schäffler, Schedler (from Schedel = hollow measure), Simmermacher (from Simmer = hollow measure), Tonnenmacher (from Tonne = hollow measure), Weinküfer and Wynzuegel.

Küfer - Zeichnung

The name is derived from the runner (wooden vessel); the Celts were already using wooden barrels on a large scale to transport wine around 600 BC, which is why the craft of barrel-making has an ancient tradition.
