The state in the north-east of the USA with the capital Hartford covers 14,357 km². It was one of the thirteen founding colonies and was the fifth state to be admitted to the USA in 1788. Connecticut is the southernmost of the New England states. It borders New York to the west, Massachusetts to the north and Rhode Island to the east.

History

Modern viticulture developed late. The US viticulture pioneer Philip Wagner (1904-1996), who also promoted the introduction and spread of French hybrids in Connecticut, provided an important impetus from the 1940s onwards. A decisive step was the "Connecticut Winery Act" passed in 1978, which made it easier for small farms to produce wine. Sherman P. Haight Jr, the founder of the first winery, was instrumental in this.
