Connecticut

The state in the northeast of the USA on the Atlantic Ocean with the capital Hartford is the southernmost of the New England states. In the south the state borders on New York. Classified as AVA are Southeastern New England and Western Connecticut Highlands, which share the states of New England. There are frequent winter frosts, only on the coast the climate is more moderate due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. Hybrids (mainly white varieties) are cultivated on a larger scale, which became popular along the entire East Coast of America from the 1950s onwards thanks to the efforts of the American viticultural pioneer Philip Wagner (1904-1996). The European varieties are dominated by Chardonnay. Fruit wine as well as mead is produced from various berry fruits and apples. There are about a dozen production companies, such as Bishops Farms Winery, Heritage Trail Vineyards (founded in the 18th century), Hopkins Vineyard, McLaughlin Vineyards, Nutmeg, Sharpe Hill and Stonington Vineyards.
