The winery is located in the town of Livermore in the Livermore Valley AVA area (Alameda County, Central Coast region) in California. It was founded in 1883 by Irish immigrant James Concannon, making it one of the oldest in the state. He was one of the first to plant the Petite Sirah (Durif) variety, which was imported from France. Today, John Concannon is the fourth generation of his family to run the business. Concannon has been part of the wine multinational The Wine Group since 2002.
The vineyards cover 80 hectares of vines on stony gravel soils. They are planted with the red wine varieties Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz (Syrah), Zinfandel, Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta) and Tempranillo, as well as the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Environmentally friendly viticulture is practised, largely without the use of pesticides. The wines are vinified in the typical Bordeaux and Rhône style. There are the Selected Vineyards (grapes from the Central Coast region), Conservancy (grapes from the Livermore Valley), Reserve and Heritage (Petite Sirah) wine lines. The wines are matured in French barrique barrels.
