The red grape variety is a new variety between ((Castelão Francês x Alicante Henri Bouschet) x Henri Alicante Bouschet) x Muscat d'Hamburg. It was crossed in Portugal in 1959 by the breeder José Leão Ferreira. The late maturing vine is susceptible to black spot disease. It produces light red, acidic red wines with moderate alcohol content for rather quick enjoyment, which are mainly used as blends. The variety is cultivated in Madeira. In 2016, 103 hectares of vines have been declared with an increasing trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
