DOC area for white wines in the Italian region of Lazio. It is located in the western part of the Castelli Romani area. The zone covers around 1,500 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Albano Laziale, Ardea, Arricia, Castel Gandolfo (with the Pope's summer residence, which has existed since 1628), Lanuvio and Pomezia. The famous Via Appia Antica runs through the area. The wine is blended from Malvasia Rossa = Malvasia Bianca di Candia (max. 60%), Trebbiano Toscano, Trebbiano Giallo and Trebbiano di Soave = Verdicchio Bianco (25-50%), Malvasia Puntinata = Malvasia del Lazio (5-45%), and other permitted (max. 10%). It is also produced as Novello, Superiore and Spumante.
I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
