The winery is located in the municipality of Gratallops in the Spanish DOCa area of Priorato (Catalonia). It was founded in 1979 by René Barbier under the name "René Barbier Fill" (Fill = son). While he was studying in Bordeaux, the flourishing family business "René Barbier" in Penedès went bankrupt after the death of his father and was taken over by the multi Freixenet. Due to the risk of confusion, Barbier changed the name to Clos Mogador (his wife's name) in 1997. He was one of the four winemakers who founded the success of the area. His great-grandfather Leon Barbier had already bought land in Priorato in 1870. The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vines planted with Garnatxa Negra (Garnacha Tinta), Carineña (Mazuelo), Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Syrah. The red wine "Clos Mogador", which is considered a cult wine, is blended from mainly Garnatxa Negra with portions of the other varieties and is matured in French barriques. The second wine is called "Clos Manyetes" from Carineña and Garnatxa Negra.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
