The vineyard is located in the municipality of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the area of the same name in the southern Rhône valley. It has been owned by the Avril family for around 300 years. Today it is managed by Paul Avril, who is assisted by his son Vincent. The vineyards cover 32 hectares of vines in 18 plots. They are planted with the red wine varieties Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta), Mourvèdre, Counoise, Muscardin, Syrah and Vaccarèse, as well as the white wine varieties Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc (Garnacha Blanca), Picpoul (Piquepoul) and Roussanne. The Clos in the name refers to an enclosure with walls. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine is produced with an extremely limited yield of just 18 hectolitres per hectare. It reaches drinking maturity after six to ten years at the earliest and is extremely age-worthy. The French presidents Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970) and Georges Pompidou (1911-1974) counted this Châteauneuf-du-Pape among their favourite wines.
