Cilian vine

The red grape variety is an interspecific cross between wild vines of the species Vitis riparia x Vitis labrusca, probably a natural cross. Synonyms are Blue Ciliano and Ciliano. The name was probably given after the wine saint Kilian. The hybrid arrived in the Palatinate from Erfurt (Thuringia), where it was spread around the city of Speyer in 1883 by the name-giving farmer or gardener Kilian Vonderschmitt (in other sources Vonderschmied). The vine is resistant to phylloxera and both types of mildew. It produces simple, acid-accentuated wines which are popularly called Mops or Rambas. In the 1930s, under Nazi rule, the vine was ordered to be eradicated, but some vines have been preserved around Dudenhofen (Rhineland-Palatinate). Wines for own consumption are still made from them today. In 2005 the municipality decided to preserve the variety as a cultural asset. In 2016, however, no stocks were declared (statistics Kym Anderson).
