The DO named after the city of the same name is located in the Spanish region of Castilla y León, west of the DO Ribera del Duero. It comprises about 2,900 hectares of vineyards in 12 municipalities, mostly on slopes and terraces. The continental climate is characterized by hot summers and cold winters. A Clairet was already produced here in the Middle Ages and today's good reputation is also based on rosé wines (Rosados), which account for two thirds of production. These are made from the red varieties Tinto del País (Tempranillo, at least 60%) and Garnacha Tinta, as well as the white varieties Verdejo, Viura, Palomino and Albillo, and are briefly aged in barrels. On the back label they are identified as Cigales Nuevo. The red wines are blended from Tinto del País (at least 85%) and Garnacha Tinta and sometimes also with Cabernet Sauvignon.
