Chkhaveri

The white grape variety originates from Georgia. Synonyms are Tchkhaveri and Vanis Chkhaveri. The origin (parentage) is unknown. According to an unverifiable and unlikely hypothesis, it is said to have played a role in the wines of Colchis in the southern Caucasus mentioned by Homer (8th century BC). The very late-ripening vine with reddish berries produces fruity white wines. It is cultivated in the Adjara and Guria regions in the west, as well as Apkhazeti in the north-west of the country. In 2016, 26 hectares were designated (Kym Anderson statistics).
