The winery is located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe in the area of the same name in the Médoc(Bordeaux). It was last categorised as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in the Bordeaux classification according to the old system, which is no longer valid, in 2003. It was created in 1810 when the Irish-born Frank Phélan merged the two estates Clos de Garamey and Château Ségur. Both formerly belonged to the Ségur family. From 1924 to 1985, it was owned by the Delon family, who then sold it to Xavier Gardinier, former general director of the Pommery champagne house. He introduced the highest quality criteria; the lesser vintages of 1984 and 1985 were not marketed under the château name. Today, the estate is managed by Thierry Gardinier. The estate comprises a total of 180 hectares, 89 of which are used for viticulture. Of these, 64 hectares are in Saint-Estèphe, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (46%) and Cabernet Franc (4%). The long-lasting red wine matures for up to 18 months in 50% new barriques. The second wine is called "Frank Phélan".
