The vineyard is located in the municipality of Bommes in the Sauternes area (Graves, Bordeaux) in the immediate vicinity of the famous Château d'Yquem. Extensive land ownership by the eponymous Raymond Peyraguey is documented for the year 1618. In 1742, it became the property of Nicolas Pierre de Pichard, who also owned the Château Coutet and Château Lafite-Rothschild (then Château Lafite) wine estates at the time. The latter lost his head under the guillotine during the French Revolution in 1794. In 1796, it was acquired by the bourgeois Lafaurie.

After several owners, there was a division of the estate in 1879 and Château Clos Haut-Peyraguey was created as a second wine estate. Other owners included the wine merchant Désiré Cordier (from 1917) and the energy group GDF Suez (from 1984), until it was finally purchased in 2014 by the Swiss entrepreneur Silvio Denz (owner of Château Faugères, among others).
