The vineyard is located in the municipality of Martillac in the Pessac-Léognan area of Graves (Bordeaux). The name is derived from a 12th century tower that was part of a castle. The ruins were used as a quarry for the construction of the château in the 18th century. In 1929, the estate became the property of the Kressmann family and wine trading company. Today it is run by the next generation of the Kressmann family, the brothers Tristan and Loïc. At the end of the 1980s, the oenologists Denis Dubourdieu (*1949) and Michel Rolland (*1947) were hired as consultants.

The vineyards cover a total of 42 hectares of vines. Of these, 33 are planted with the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (35%) and Petit Verdot (5%), and 9 hectares with the white wine varieties Sémillon (55%), Sauvignon Blanc (40%) and Muscadelle (5%). The estate's own herd of cattle on 10 hectares of pastureland provides the fertiliser for the organic farming. Both the white and red wines are classified as Cru Classé de Graves. The long-lasting red wine is matured for 20 months in barriques, 40% of which are new. The second red wine is called "Château La Grave-Martillac". The long-lasting white wine is aged for 15 months in 40% new barriques.
